"Aristocracy and People" are contrasted above, and we are meant to read the same contrast here. But I think it's instructive that both Aristocracy and the People are opposed to the society of the material interests. The material interests, which dominate the Occidental Republic at the end of the book, are portrayed as both a disillusioned and an exploitative force.
