In the novel Nostromo calls himself a "thief" and the narrator calls his act "a transgression, a crime," but the notion of "moral ruin" is more explicit than the novel gets. I feel that morality here is less a matter of property laws than of Nostromo's former integrity of spirit, which he has lost by taking on a duplicitous role.
